Rab Subedar – Director of Service Delivery

Imagine the shock of moving from your homeland of Trinidad to Moose Lake, MB as a youngster. That is exactly the journey Rab Subedar took, when his father obtained a teaching position with the Frontier School Division. Fast forward a few years and today Rab continues to maintain the strong connection to First Nations communities and education that was first established by his parents.
Currently, Rab is MFNERC’s Director of Service Delivery. Simply put, he ensures the services MFNERC provides to Manitoba’s First Nations schools, responds to the needs of those schools. The programs that fall under his directorship include: School Planning, Training Initiatives, Student Assessment and Special Education.
His work with MFNERC began when the Education Centre was still in its infancy, as he was contracted to do some groundwork with the initial team. That was over twelve years ago, and he’s been here ever since.
It’s a long way from his first teaching position in Pelican Rapids, MB. Yet then as now, and throughout his 35+ year education career, Rab has always felt he could relate to the First Nations worldview. The warmth, humour and resilience of the people made him want to continue to be a part of, and work in, the culture.
Today, many of his tasks involve proposal and report writing, along with guiding his staff who work directly with the schools. But if there is one thing he misses about being in the school environment it is the interaction with the people, with the students. That’s why he tries to visit the communities whenever he can, bringing his own warmth and sense of humour to a people who continue to inspire him.
