Announces Groundbreaking MOU with the Province

Wapaskwa Virtual Collegiate Progressing into Accredited Institution

The Manitoba First Nations Education Resource Centre’s (MFNERC) WAPASKWA VIRTUAL COLLEGIATE signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Manitoba Education and Advanced Learning for the “Operation of a Virtual Collegiate” on Monday, November 19, 2013.

Lorne C. Keeper, Executive Director, MFNERC states

I am pleased to announce that Wapaskwa Virtual Collegiate (WVC) is now Manitoba’s First Accredited Virtual High School. The staff of the WVC, along with our partners at Credenda Virtual High School and Manitoba Education, have worked collaboratively to see the creation of a learning institution worthy of the twenty-first century. Our First Nations students and their provincial counterparts will now have new educational opportunities to build strong and promising futures.

The MOU marks the start of WVC operating as an official institution. Wapaskwa in the Cree language translates to white bear or polar bear, an animal known for strength and bravery. The name reflects the spirit of the students at WVC. Many live in remote and isolated communities in Manitoba’s northern regions; it’s not always easy to attain higher education.

The Wapaskwa Virtual Collegiate received its first year of project funding through the Educational Partnerships Program in September 2009. By April 2010, WVC piloted its first course with a school. To date, over 900 students have taken courses through the WVC. With accreditation in the works, students will be given the option to graduate from the WVC.
