2015 Summer Institutes Recap

August is a busy month here at MFNERC. Every year, teachers, principals and other First Nations educators are invited to attend our summer institutes.  These informative multi-day events cover a wide range of subjects and, upon completion, many participants are eligible to receive accreditation towards post-secondary education certificates.

This year, our principals’ summer institute took place at Qualico Family Centre at Assiniboine Park. The theme was “Creating Balance in School Leadership”. Elders and other professionals spoke about how to achieve desired outcomes for ELA, math and social studies; reporting; data collection and student assessment. Also covered was the importance of incorporating land-based programming into school curriculum.

During the special education summer institute (which took place at MFNERC), everything from using smart boards in the classroom to improving reading comprehension was covered; while the literacy summer institute focused on creating instructional programs for early years students.

Overall our summer institutes were, once again, a huge success. We’d like to thank all the presenters and participants for their contributions.
