Listeners of the Earth

Every year MFNERC sends its top gold medal finalists from the Manitoba First Nations Science Fair to the Canada-Wide Science Fair.

In 2017, we sent video cameras along with Skylin Dejarlais & Deshawn McKay of the Ochichakkosipi First Nation to follow their amazing experience in Regina. Their project “Wiggle it, Just a Little Bit” focused on the science and art of vermicomposting, which they created using scraps from the Donald Ahmo school cafeteria. It was an idea they came up with after soil quality in their community was affected by flooding in 2012.

Skylin and Deshawn are passionate about the environment and their community. They are self-described “Listeners of the Earth”, who want to make a difference in their community.

Learn more about their project here.

At MFNERC, we are honoured to nurture the next generation of First Nations scientists, researchers and leaders. Good luck to the 2018 finalists heading to Ottawa in May. We will be cheering for you!
