The day-long meeting started with Elder Don Robertson saying an opening prayer and with some welcoming remarks from Margaret Scott, Director of Special Education; Don Shackel, Assistant Director of Special Education; and Shirley Myran, Manager of the Training Institute.

Staff meetings aren’t always just business as usual! The Special Education staff had many laughs while sharing their stories about being on the road. While travelling with a colleague, Don Shackel ran out of gas and got his car stuck in a snowy ditch. In the same trip! But with the help of local neighbours, they managed to find a warm place to sit, have dinner, and experience some hilarious neighbour antics to help get his car out of the ditch.
Frances Dejarlais shared a story about ice roads that many could relate to. She and her colleagues were driving just before the spring break-up. Water was everywhere, and even though the ice was still quite thick, it looked as though they would fall right through. They all held their breath, rolled down the windows, and opened the doors, “just in case,” while crossing the river.
The meeting ended with 10 staff awards, including Jenny Daniels for “Best heart-warming greetings,” Mary Lukes for “Most improved travel requests,” and Anne Cameron for “Most social butterfly” award. It’s easy to see how well this team gets along and how they support one another. It just goes to show how much fun you can have when you love your job and the services you provide.
