As summer continues, camping season is fully underway. At MFNERC, we organize and fund a unique kind of camping program. It is for our youth, to bring them closer to their roots.
Recently, students in the northern part of our province got a chance to participate in just such a camp. At the week long event, students took part in different culturally relevant projects in order to teach them about their Dene heritage and promote their language. Among many activities, they built tipis, smoked meat and took numerous fishing trips.
With local educators, community members, and MFNERC staff helping to instruct the young people, the goal to inspire students to stay close to their culture, learn as much as they can and, one day, pass that knowledge on, was definitely achieved.
