In partnership with Sagkeeng Anicinabe High School, MFNERC created a grade nine course in Cultural Awareness through Outdoor Education.
“The goal of the course is to bridge the modern way of life to First Nations traditions through science, math, astronomy, language and spirituality.” It contains 13 units covering such topics as, Asema (Tobacco), Ween Gushk (Sage), Wish Kobi (Sweetgrass), Sweat Lodge Teachings, Drum Teachings and Clan Teachings. Upon completion of the course, students are able to identify, harvest and prepare traditional plants and medicines to use in ceremonies and for personal reasons.
