First Nations Career Planning Project Contractor Education Partnerships Program (EPP)

December 2018 – June 2019

Purpose

The contractor will serve as researcher, writer, and editor for the Manitoba First Nations Career Planning Project review and report on provincial Career Development curriculum and career fairs. The contractor will work with Manitoba First Nations and Manitoba Education and Training to review Career Development Education and career fair options available to students in the provincial education system. The contractor will also conduct a review of Career Development Education and career fair options available to students on reserve. The contractor will conduct a needs assessment to determine priorities for expanding career development options on reserve.

The candidate will provide a detailed report of existing career development and career fair programming on reserve and develop a plan to increase career exploration and career fair participationforFirstNations. Inthiscapacity,theincumbentwillworkcloselywithFirstNations, MFNERC staff and applicable provincial departments to obtain necessary information for the production of the needs assessment and report. The applicant will have knowledge of First Nations education and community based programming on-reserve. The incumbent must be familiar with career planning, post-secondary education and training institutions in Manitoba.

The successful candidate will have excellent writing, editing, proofreading and analytical skills. The incumbent will be able to communicate in a clear, compelling and highly persuasive manner. The contractor must be self-motivated, detail-oriented, highly organized, and be able to synthesize information and communicate it in a succinct manner. The ability to effectively change writing styles to fit the audience, context and voice of the piece is crucial.

The incumbent will be responsible for the production and presentation of materials created, and/or serve as the main contact with external partners and suppliers with respect to the production, design and completion of written documents. The contractor must be willing and able to travel to First Nations.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Work in consultation with First Nations, the EPP Project Lead, MFNERC staff to develop the Manitoba First Nations career planning needs assessment and report;
  • Complete research; gather information and interview staff and key stakeholders in Manitoba First Nations regarding career development and access to career fairs on reserve;
  • Complete research; gather information and interview staff and key stakeholders at Manitoba Education and Training;
  • Complete research; gather information and interview staff and key stakeholders at post- secondary and training institutions in Manitoba;
  • Ensure written materials are presented in an appealing and professional manner;
  • Maintain a high degree of motivation and superior work ethic to complete the work in a

    timely manner.

  • Knowledge of Career Education curriculum and career exploration models;
  • Knowledge of post-secondary education and training programs within Manitoba;
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with a track record for producing high-quality,

    persuasive documents;

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to lead planning sessions and work collaboratively

    with others;

  • Ability to build relationships, foster collaboration, and develop partnerships between

    various educational stakeholders;

  • Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational, planning, problem solving, and

    time management skills;

  • Able to handle information ethically, accurately and confidentially;
  • Team oriented with the ability to work independently;
  • Strong understanding of First Nations communities and governance structures;
  • Knowledge, understanding and appreciation of First Nations culture;
  • Ability to speak a First Nations language an asset;
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office software.
