Special Education Unit

By Margaret Scott

The Special Education Unit is pleased to announce and welcome Special Education Specialist, Adeline Mercredi. Adeline will work with Team 2 and service Opaskwayak, Cross Lake, Chemawawin, Sapotaweyak, Wuskwi Sipihk, Mathias Colomb and Tootinaowazibeeng. Adeline replaces Richelle Lovegrove who is now a Reading Clinician for MFNERC.

Since Richelle is the first First Nation Reading Clinician in Manitoba, time is required for her to explore models that other Reading Clinicians currently use in Manitoba. Through exploration  she will then have a better idea in ordering tools and resources necessary to set up a practice. In the meantime she will also assist Adeline in becoming familiar with the requirements of Specialist Education Specialist. Richelle will also provide regional training on the Woodcock Johnson III and plans to work closely with the Speech Language Clinicians. Further information will be forth coming as to the time Richelle will be available. Since she is the only Reading Clinician, the most equitable way for service delivery is currently being considered.

There will be a regional training on the Woodcock Johnson III Assessment Tool. This training will be on Sept. 27 and 28, 2011, in Winnipeg. Training will be provided by Richelle Lovegrove. Registration form will be sent out Sept. 12th, capacity is limited to 14 participants due to the highly specific nature of the diagnostic assessment tool.
