O.K. School Students are Math Masters!

Last week, students of our very own O.K. School in Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation reached 2nd place in a Nationwide Mathematics competition!

This achievement was made possible through the generous support of OLPC Canada. Last year students of Otetiskiwin Kiskinwamahtowekamik School in Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation (Nelson House, Manitoba) received personal laptops through the OLPC Canada program. The school then enrolled in Mathletics, an internet-based program that allows students to compete in mathematical challenges. Points are awarded for participation, with additional points for each question answered correctly. Last week, Mr. Nathan Lang’s Grade 3 students were thrilled to reach second place in Canada! Mr. Lang is inspired by the way technology has enhanced his students’ passion for mathematics. “The students are loving it, they are running around the classroom to look at each others monitors. They shout out to see how many points other students have. These laptops have the students loving Math. It follows the curriculum, and every spare chance they want to borrow a laptop so they can do Math.”

Not only were they 2nd in Canada, the Grade 3 students also placed 49th in the world. Quite an achievement for a northern community with a total population of approximately 4000 people. Congratulations!
