Pinaymootang School-Wide Math Festival 2018

The Pinaymootang school held its new annual Math Festival on December 12 and it was a great success. The entire school participated in the friendly math competition and had projects from every grade on display. We were able to sit with Margaret Hart after the event to ask her how this festival came to be. “A big part of the MFNSS (Manitoba First Nations School System) is about nurturing and supporting each Childs unique gifts,” she said. “One of the big things that I support is having a math identity, and so for me, celebrating that identity in math and being able to come  here and support the kids and their achievements, the things they want to share with us and each other as a group is very important to me.” The festival is about celebrating math on a school wide scale and having math become a community fun event and show that it isn’t something to fear or be intimidated by. It’s been lots of fun and laughs with the kids. “Based on the feed back from last year this has been a successful and rewarding experience for the school. The kids like it, they have fun. We added the displays this year and the group Math Bee for the Middle and Senior year students. It’s all to reinforce to the students that math is fun.” Says Micheal Valdez. Montana Anderson, a Grade 12 student at Pinaymootang School said “This event was very interactive, we got to move around our school and interact with our teachers and classmates more. It was a very unique experience to have with my classmates.”
