Sagkeeng Anicinabe First Nation will be hosting the 7th Annual Youth Gathering for Traditional Land-based Teachings March 1-3.
This year’s gathering will include land-based education workshops and competitions to provide our youth with team building skills. It will also offer knowledge of how First Nations people have always used animals, trees, and water for all aspects of life. Activities will include hunting, animal preparation, and teachings about the essential parts of the animal that can be used to make tools or instruments required for everyday tasks. We also want to teach the young people the importance of being involved in events that First Nations took part in prior to colonization.
Students will be organized into teams, each including at least one student from each school attending, and will engage in three categories of activities:
- Workshops on Traditional Practices related to harvesting (hunting/ fishing/ trapping) and on survival skills
- Workshops with Elders on Traditional Teachings – legends, stories, values
- Cooperative Games requiring team effort to complete, and designed around skills being taught/developed in the various land-based education programs in schools
Registrations are limited to the first 16 schools that apply. Ensure your school’s participation by returning the registration form as soon as possible to:
