This film is based on the story of John Joseph Harper, a member of the Wasagamack First Nation in the Island Lake area. Harper was shot and killed by a Winnipeg Police officer on March 8th, 1988. At the time of his death, he was the executive director of the Island Lake Tribal Council and a leader in Manitoba’s Indigenous community. Harper’s case was one of the two major cases in Canada that led to, at the time, the creation of the Aboriginal Justice Inquiry. Included are questions for students to answer about the film, discussion topic, and facts about this true story in PDF form.
