Leaps and Bounds

What Is Leaps and Bounds?
Leaps and Bounds Towards Math Understanding is a supplementary resource for students struggling in mathematics, Grades 3 to 8. This resource is designed to assist teachers in providing precise, targeted remediation for these students-as a whole class, in small groups, or individually.
For each topic in each strand, a short diagnostic assessment provides a snapshot of what students understand and what they do not. Each diagnostic leads to tailored intervention materials that provide differentiated instruction for each student or group of students. These materials are organized into pathways with open-ended and guided interventions.

The resource may be used by a classroom teacher, special education teacher, or tutor.

What Is the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System?

The Fountas and Pinnell kit is a Benchmark Assessment System that can be used as a literacy diagnostic tool.  It includes a diverse selection of grade level texts.  It allows teachers to assess students to determine text reading level, the use of reading strategies, and a variety of comprehension skills.  This enables classroom teachers and specialists to engage in a diagnosis of a variety of reading/writing skills.   This assessment system is designed to measure progress in a way that informs for differentiated instruction.  Observable behaviors are assessed, and are then used to guide for best teaching practices at every level.

Each level (A to Z) texts are analyzed based on the following ten characteristics:

-genre/form, text structure, content, themes and ideas, language and literary features, sentence complexity, vocabulary, word difficulty, illustrations/graphics, and book and print features.
