WestCan/Lighting the Fire 2015: Day Three Recap

Friday at WestCan/Lighting the Fire was non-stop workshops, and participants were eager to learn and share as much as possible on the conference’s final day. Once again workshops were filled to capacity and discussions were pertinent and engaging.

At the Traditional Family Parenting workshop, Arlene Flatfoot, an Early Childhood Education Specialist from MFNERC, spoke on how bringing back traditional knowledge systems and teachings can help raise future generations to be strong, healthy and confident.

Many workshops were full to capacity.

Across the hall, five teachers from Manitoba First Nations outlined the process of Enhancing Literacy and Learning through the Mediation of Story. They helped participants develop a lesson plan designed to incorporate First Nations perspectives, provincial ELA learning outcomes as well as action research.

Meanwhile, Jessica Chisholm of MFNERC, provided a detailed look at the Welcome to Kindergarten program and kept participants engaged with many hands-on activities.

And, at the nearby Build Confidence with Great Math Teaching Strategies workshop, Liz Barrett offered an overview of the successful JUMP Math program and spoke about how teachers can build student confidence when it comes to math.

With that, on Friday afternoon, the 17th Annual Lighting the Fire Education Conference was complete. On behalf of MFNERC, we’d like to extend a huge thank you, meegwetch, ekosi and merci to each and every one who participated and presented at our conference. What an inspiring time it was. We can’t wait to see you next year!
