Manitoba Aboriginal Language Strategy Group Set to Renew Agreement

News Release from Manitoba Aboriginal Language Strategy Group:

The Manitoba Aboriginal Languages Strategy (MALS) Partnership Agreement is set to be renewed by four lead organizations, including; Manitoba Education – The Indigenous Inclusion Directorate (IID), Manitoba First Nations Education Resource Centre (MFNERC), University College of the North (UCN), and the Indigenous Languages of Manitoba (ILM). The signing ceremony took place on October 7, 2021.

The Passing of Chief Orville Smoke

It is with great sadness that MFNERC management and staff send condolences to the family and community of Itancan (Chief) Orville Smoke of Dakota Plains Wahpeton Oyate. Chief Smoke was a highly respected leader who dedicated his life for the self-determination and autonomy for the people of Dakota Plains Wahpeton Oyate. Having served his community with passion and resilience for over twenty-seven years, Itancan Orville Smoke will be deeply missed by all.

Included in the launch is a video presentation created by the Turtle Lodge International Centre of Indigenous Education and Wellness.

Declaration on Indigenous Languages

The Manitoba Aboriginal Languages Strategy (MALS) Grandparents Council have shared this Declaration on Indigenous Languages and the Sacred responsibility we all have in the preservation of our languages.

The 2022 Indigenous Peoples Development Program

Applicants must have graduated within the last 2 years from a four year post-secondary program.
The program will remain fully remote, and candidates from across Canada are welcome to apply.
This year we will be hiring for 20 positions in the following lines of business: Finance, Technology & Operations, Internal Audit, Human Resources, Canadian Banking, Insurance, Capital Markets, and Ventures.

Province Acknowledges Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30

Day of Observation Advances Reconciliation, Allows Manitobans to Reflect on Residential School Experiences of First Nations, Métis and Inuit: Lagimodiere

The Manitoba government is recognizing the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation as a day of observance to encourage reflection and meaningful discussions about the impacts of residential schools, Indigenous Reconciliation and Northern Relations Minister Alan Lagimodiere announced today.

Schools will be closed and no classes will be held on that day. Manitoba’s public servants will also observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and non-essential government services and offices will be closed for the day.

Message from the Director of Languages and Cultures

Aaniin,

It is that time of year when staff and students return to school ready and eager to go. Unfortunately, the past year and a half has been difficult for staff and students dealing with the pandemic. At the MFNERC, we have had some difficulty delivering the services that we have in the past, but we were able to modify our work to provide services remotely and resources to support at-home learning. For example, our Essential Learning Packages created are by grade level, covering all subject areas. These are still available for our member communities to access should they need to.

MFNSS and Keeseekoowenin First Nation Celebrate Renewed Education Agreement

September 2, 2021 – Chief Norman Bone and Councillors Leslie Blackbird, Barry Bone, and Bradley Burns from Keeseekoowenin First Nation met with Mr. Charles Cochrane, Executive Director of MFNERC, to renew their partnership agreement.

Renewed Agreement Celebrated Between Lake Manitoba First Nation and the MFNSS

August 12, 2021 – Chief Cornell McLean and Councillors Kevin Swan, Byron Swan, Berry McLean, and Dwight Paul from Lake Manitoba First Nation met with Charles Cochrane, Executive Director of MFNERC, to take part in a signing ceremony today. Chief Cornell McLean and Charles Cochrane signed a five-year partnership agreement between Lake Manitoba First Nation and MFNSS.
